Fine Arts

The Horizon Christian High School Fine Arts Department offers students opportunities to learn, play, and perform for Jesus, the “audience of One.”

Beyond academics, we seek to engage the whole person, and Horizon Christian High School students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of artistic activities. The heart of learning is a critical part of our approach, and we seek to bring students fully alive by igniting the heart, educating the mind, and engaging the hands.

The exploration of artistic gifts is a way to give back to God. Horizon Christian High School students also have the opportunity to explore artistic endeavors, including choir/ensemble, art history and technique, and drama. Performance is seen as not only a way to express unique talents and abilities, but as one of the ways in which we can give back to God.

At HCHS our Fine Arts department offers a variety of classes to choose from...

Ensemble (Sonrise) - The primary goal of our department is simple: to worship God through music. Whether we’re performing a classical piece, singing a Broadway tune or leading contemporary worship, we look for ways to connect God’s truth to everyday life and bring people heart-to-heart with God.   We know the best musical ambassadors are those who have an understanding of the value of music, choral literature, and style. So we work on attaining general musical knowledge, vocal production skills, critical thinking skills, and independent and corporate performance skills while working toward a common goal. We pursue excellence in our craft so that our messages through song can be delivered powerfully and distraction-free.   Our concert schedule includes a Christmas celebration in December, as well as a Spring program in May. However, no two years are ever the same, as competitions, chapel events, and musical theater opportunities are incorporated into our curriculum, depending on student goals and specific school-wide activities.

Art - Depending upon enrollment, art curriculum will adjust to the level of the students. A basic art class would include the elements and principles of design. Students would be expected to learn how to draw, and how to use color. Students will learn the fundamentals of composition and perspective and how to critique as well as create art. This is a project-oriented class and students must be willing to engage in projects through completion. There may be a fee for art supplies.

Drama - The class will provide an introduction to theatre arts. Students will learn the basic skills required of a performer on stage. Areas covered will be improvisation, short scenes, stagecraft, and voice work, body work, and the communication of emotion through body language. Students may study play writing and actually perform and direct in their own play pending approval of the instructor. A spring musical will be performed each year and a series of one-act plays will be done in the fall. Horizon Christian High School produced its first ever full musical production in the spring of 2011, with Fiddler on the Roof.

January 27-29th 2012 at the PCC-Sylvania BIG Theater, 16 extraordinary students from the Horizon Christian High School took the stage and presented the teaching of Jesus In John Michael Tebelak’s  Broadway hit Musical Godspell.  This musical took the theater world by storm in 1972 and is just as pertinent today.  The evening will be featuring the music by Stephen Schwartz,  of Wicked fame.

This drama production provided many different forms of performance art while portraying the life of Christ and his teachings.
