Pre-K & Kindergarten

Horizon Christian Schools offers a Pre-Kindergarten program designed for children who will be 5 on or before December 31st of the current academic school year.  This class meets on the Sagert campus Monday through Thursday afternoons.  This program prepares eligible students for kindergarten with pre-reading, pre-writing, phonemic awareness, basic math concepts and emergent literacy activities.  Students develop positive work habits, practice following directions, learn to work independently and strengthen listening skills through various activities.  Plenty of time is devoted to play, giving children opportunity to experience learning in a way that is best suited to their development.  Our curriculum includes visits to the library, music instruction as well as chapel attendance.  Weekly memory verses are learned.  Our goal is to introduce students to school in a setting that brings life to learning.

Horizon Christian Schools Kindergarten Program consists of two options: half-day and full-day classes. All classes offer a strong foundation for first grade success and are taught by credentialed teachers. Our intention is to point children to Christ throughout the day.

We seek to align our Kindergarten Program with the Oregon Department of Education standards. Half-day and full-day classes both offer literacy centers featuring Kid Writing and Lucy Calkins curriculum. American Sign Language adds a kinesthetic element to our pre-reading program. Math instruction will cover patterns, number concepts, comparisons, and measurements through the Math Their Way curriculum. Bible is taught daily.

Each week students participate in Music, Computers, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education instructed by specialists in that subject area. All classes attend the Library and also have a weekly Chapel program.

Bringing Life to Learning in a developmentally appropriate way is the cornerstone in all that we do. Hands-on activities, interactive centers, and kid-centric manipulative give teachers opportunities to nurture students and give individualized attention. Group circle times foster community building and social skills.

Half-day and full-day Kindergarten teachers partner and design their curriculum so that all Kindergartners are prepared for first grade. Core curriculum is planned during weekly team meetings so that all students are equally exposed to content. Full-Day Kindergarten also includes lunch time, dramatics, arts and crafts, recess, and social studies and science enrichment.
