At Horizon Christian High School, we educate the whole child, mind, body, and soul. We are committed to developing each student's unique, God-given talents and gifts, and every endeavor—from football to math, music to language—is seen as a way to address Jesus Christ, the ever-present, unchanging "audience of One."
We not only bring learning to life—we Bring Life to Learning. LIFE is brought to learning when teachers pour their passionate hearts and committed lives into the academic content. LIFE is brought to learning when knowledge is set on fire by the presence and Word of God. LIFE is brought to learning when truth is not only taught but is lived. And LIFE is ultimately brought to learning by the person of Jesus Christ being embraced, experienced, and pursued.
Our curriculum is rigorous and balanced, and we emphasize academics, athletics, arts, and activities. Subjects satisfy those mandated by the State of Oregon for graduation and all courses are presented from a Biblical centered perspective. By teaching students to love God and to love each other, Horizon Christian High School builds scholars and champions ready to both engage in intellectual and athletic pursuits and serve the community.
The high school years can be some of the most exciting and enjoyable times in the lives of students and parents. And yet these formative years are not without challenges. However if the student is immersed in an educational environment and culture saturated with the values that promote healthy social interaction, inspire excellence in academic, arts and athletics, and foster the spiritual formation of heart soul and mind, such an environment and experience cannot help but prepare students to succeed during and beyond high school.”
– Senior Associate Pastor Roger Levasa, Horizon Community Church.
At Horizon Christian High School, we offer:
A rigorous, well-rounded curriculum firmly centered on the teachings of Christ: Horizon offers a well-rounded education that is firmly grounded in the principles and teachings of Christ. Within the context of a Christian worldview, we teach students to develop higher order thinking skills - skills that will be indispensable in the world beyond the classroom. To challenge minds and develop scholarship, we encourage them to ask the right questions and to turn ideas inside out and upside down. Horizon students consistently score above the national average in all subject areas on the nationally indexed Stanford Achievement Test (SAT).
A philosophy of education that goes beyond the classroom: We seek to provide a comprehensive education that goes beyond traditional learning. Our philosophy of education includes six key areas of guidance and instruction:
Personalized, one-on-one attention: Horizon students are never "lost in the crowd." We keep our class sizes small to foster one-on-one learning and personalized attention—key to the development of both academic capability and a student's sense of belonging in and engagement with the world. This commitment to knowing every child—and their families—also allows us to detect and address challenges early on, as well as identify a child's special gifts and unique talents.
A commitment to engaging parents as partners: Quality education depends on both the independence and interdependence of the three components of education: parent, teacher, and student. Students must be passionate about learning, parents must be willing to engage, and teachers must be ready to inspire, challenge, and motivate. At Horizon, our commitment is to stabilize every part of the equation, not only by doing our part to provide rigorous learning and consistent nurturing but by ensuring that parents are welcomed and engaged as partners.
A safe, nurturing environment where "whoever will, may come": At Horizon Christian High School, we are committed to establishing a safe, nurturing environment, free from distractions often found in other education arenas. We have zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol, and a "no tolerance" policy when it comes to bullying. HCHS students are taught that it is a joy to serve others.
Horizon Christian High School, while affiliated with Horizon Community Church, is interdenominational. At Horizon Christian, "whoever will may come." This openness is reflected by the fact that Horizon Christian students attend more than 80 different churches in the Portland/Vancouver area. Every newly admitted student is welcomed with open arms not just by faculty and staff but by Horizon Christian students themselves. We only ask that students have both the heart and the desire to learn and the willingness to explore a Christian worldview.
