At Horizon Christian Schools we offer:
A rigorous, well-rounded curriculum firmly centered on the teachings of Christ: Horizon offers a well-rounded education that is firmly grounded in the principles and teachings of Christ. Within the context of a Christian worldview, we teach students to be thoughtful, appreciative, and productive citizens of both God's kingdom and the community in which they live.
Personalized, individual attention: From day one, we commit to appreciating every child both for who they are and who they can become. We keep our class sizes small to foster personalized attention—key to the development of both academic capability and a child's sense of belonging in and engagement with the world. This commitment to knowing every child—and their families—also allows us to detect and address challenges early on, as well as identify a child's special gifts and unique talents.
A promise to engage parents as partners: Honest, alive partnerships with parents are instrumental to our "it takes a community" approach to nurturing and educating. In tandem, we can inspire students to both love learning and each other.
A safe, nurturing, "open arms" environment: Learning can't take place if safety is in question. At Horizon, we are committed to establishing a safe, nurturing environment. We have zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol, and a "no tolerance" policy when it comes to bullying. Children are always escorted through campus and kept safe from the car line to the classroom. In the classroom we work to protect children from the discouragement that can so often accompany the environment of a formal education. Children are given both "space and a place" to develop their skills and special talents.
Horizon Christian Schools, while affiliated with Horizon Community Church, is interdenominational. We believe that "whoever will, may come," meaning our doors are open to Christians and non-Christians. New students are welcomed with open arms by both faculty and Horizon students themselves. We only ask that students and families have both the heart and the desire to learn and the willingness to explore a Christian worldview.
A belief that every child is talented and gifted in their own unique way: At Horizon, we strive to help children determine their gifts and encourage them to find ways to use them in service for Christ. One of the ways we do this is through iSmart, our innovative learning program. The iSmart philosophy is woven into all grade level curriculums and culminates with the completion of sixth grade projects. The program relies on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences to discover a child's particular learning style. While many schools cater primarily to children who are word or number smart, at Horizon we seek to include picture smart, body smart, music smart, people smart, self smart, and nature smart learners.
A culture where every child can hear from God: We teach children that everyone can hear from God, if they know Jesus—and that God will guide them in determining how to serve others. By fostering this culture, we help children understand they are part of something bigger than themselves, and Horizon encourages all students to explore ways in which they can contribute in a meaningful manner. Fundraising efforts headed by Horizon students have benefited Locks of Love, water improvement efforts for Rwanda, and Toys for Tots. Horizon students have also collected blankets, clothes, and stuffed animals for Haiti and contributed funds to help complete a church in Mexico.
